Secondary Learning to Learn Major Award Winner 2026 - Westfield Academy
A soundproof recording pod, podcasting equipment and 30 class packs of mini whiteboards to create a school-wide learning hub that improves access to teaching, revision and independent study for all learners, particularly those who face barriers to learning. The soundproof pod will provide a dedicated space where staff and sixth form students can record revision tutorials, subject-specific podcasts, exam guidance, literacy support and flipped-learning resources that can be accessed repeatedly through online platforms. This will be especially valuable for pupils with SEND, EAL learners, those eligible for Pupil Premium or Free School Meals, students with SEMH needs and pupils in alternative provision, enabling them to revisit explanations, learn at their own pace and access support beyond the classroom.
The podcasting equipment will allow both staff and students to create high-quality audio and video learning resources, while also developing communication, leadership and oracy skills through student-led projects. Sixth form students will be able to support younger learners by producing revision materials and mentoring content, helping to build a culture of independent learning and peer support across the academy.
The 30 class packs of mini whiteboards will strengthen classroom practice by increasing participation, supporting retrieval practice and enabling teachers to assess understanding instantly. Every pupil will be able to contribute ideas, test knowledge and receive feedback in a low-risk environment, helping to build confidence and improve engagement. The wider project will also support the development of adaptable learning spaces, including nurture areas and collaborative environments that help pupils feel safe, regulated and ready to learn.
Together, these resources will enhance teaching and learning across the school, complement existing ScreenBeam classroom technology and help close attainment gaps by ensuring that high-quality learning support is available whenever and wherever it is needed. By creating a sustainable library of digital resources and embedding more inclusive teaching approaches, the project will continue to benefit future cohorts long after the initial investment has been made.
